October Testa di Moro

This small lino print depicts a The Moor’s Head, also known in Italian as Teste di Moro. It is one of Sicily’s most iconic symbols—a ceramic pot shaped like a human head. The legend goes that a Moor, an Arab man, and a woman in Palermo fell in love. After a brief romance, the woman discovered that the Moor had a wife and family waiting for him in his homeland. Consumed by jealousy and betrayal, she killed the Moor in a fit of rage. She placed his severed head on her balcony, in which she planted a basil seedling, watering it with her tears. The basil thrived, attracting the attention of her neighbors, who began crafting ceramic pots in the shape of human heads to mimic her planter.

I thought that this story was pretty perfect for October, when the veil between the living and the dead is at its thinnest.
